THE SHRIVELLED RECITATIVE. Video, 17:30 min. 2020

What does the sound of a silk dress tell about its wearer and the society surrounding her? The Shrivelled Recitative video work brings forth the sounds of women’s private lives that have been forgotten—both literally and metaphorically. The video is an audiovisual inquiry into the body, an early 18th-century historical silk dress, and its sounds. A central aspect of the year-long production of the video was sewing the historical silk dress itself, donning it, and filming it in a historical environment. The video was primarily shot in the museum setting of Louhisaari Manor.

What does it sound like when there is no sound? The Shrivelled Recitative work contains metaphorical references to the exclusion of women from both mainstream history and art history. History has been written largely by and for men.
